Jerzy Liban was an outstanding composer, skillful in employing homophony, nota contra notam [counterpoint], as well as imitation and polyphony.(1)Jerzy Liban of Legnica (1464 - 1546) was a Polish composer, music theorist, teacher and philologist skilled in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. His family, probably named Weihrauch ("Incense" in English and "Libanos" in Greek), came from Germany. After studies in Cologne he returned to Poland and was active in Krakow.
In De musicae laudibus oratio, one of his theoretical works, 'he tried to prove that Latin music theory was derived from Greek by showing the usage of musical terms in Latin that come from those in Greek as well.'(2)
Let's listen to Ortus de Polonia (1501), a four-part motet in counterpoint on the story of St. Ladislaus, beautiful and--for now--the only work available on YouTube. Hopefully there's more to come.
