Louis Lully (Louis de Lully, 1664 - 1734) was the oldest son of Jean-Baptiste Lully. His godparents were King Louis XIV and Queen Maria Theresa of Spain. At age four, destined to succeed his father, the king granted him survival rights to the posts of Superintendent and Master of Music of the King's Chamber. (1)
These auspicious beginnings did not bear fruit. Louis led a dissolute life early on and was for a while interned at the psychiatric asylum of Charenton, probably with a Lettre de Cachet from the king. The hospital housed members of well-to-do families and was rather expensive. (2) His father nearly disinherited him.
He nevertheless became a musician and composer of a few Tragédies Lyriques and Divertissements often collaborating with his two brothers and other composers. (3)
When his father died in 1687 the privileged posts went to his youngest brother Jean-Louis. Upon the latter's death the following year, Louis in turn obtained the posts of Superintendent of Music and Composer of the King's Chamber. Jean-Baptiste fils, the middle brother, succeeded in 1696, sharing the positions with Lalande.
In 1694 Louis married Marthe Bourgeois. The couple had five children.
At YouTube we find the Overture from Zéphire et Flore (1688), a tragédie lyrique by Louis and Jean-Louis de Lully, and the first scene from Act III of Alcide (1693), another tragédie lyrique written with Marin Marais.
